In the 1950s, a new telephone box was installed outside the Post Office. By 2025, advances in modern technology had made the box redundant. The North Gower History Society offered to maintain the Grade II listed structure and find a new use for it, while the Community Council purchased it from BT for £1.
Local residents suggested transforming the box into a community library. BT arranged for the telephone equipment to be removed, although they initially removed the equipment from the phone box in Landimore by mistake. Once the correct box had been cleared, the light was unfortunately removed as well.
Despite a number of setbacks, the box was successfully converted into a book-swap facility and was officially opened by Hilary Spence in April 2026. Virginia Prifti volunteered to manage the library and can regularly be seen keeping the shelves stocked with books.
In keeping with the Community Council’s commitment to environmental sustainability, the conversion was carried out using largely recycled materials.
