The next Open Gardens Day will be held on Sunday 27th June 2027

Information

In 1997 five residents of Llanmadoc set up a small project to raise much-needed funds for the local churches. They opened their gardens for one afternoon hoping a few people might come along to admire their hard work — and the response exceeded all expectations.

Over the years the project expanded to include Cheriton, with around twelve gardens now opening each year, although the selection changes annually. Visitors return year after year to enjoy the gardens, refreshments and friendly atmosphere, often catching up with friends they only see during Open Gardens weekend.

For decades the event was led by the late Mike Bristow, whose dedication to village life helped shape Llanmadoc and Cheriton Open Gardens into the much-loved community event it is today. Under his leadership the village won Swansea City Council’s Community Gardens award many times, with plaques still visible around the village.

Visitor numbers have grown steadily over the years and the event is now carefully organised with signage, a free car park and a minibus service helping guests travel between the gardens across the villages.

Teas, cakes and refreshments are available in several locations and are always popular with visitors. A large team of volunteers supports the event, allowing gardeners to spend time chatting with guests and sharing ideas, inspiration and gardening knowledge.

Tickets include a programme and map to help visitors explore the gardens and find their way around. For the organisers, the event is all about sharing gardens, ideas and community spirit.

As the longest-running Open Gardens event in Gower, Llanmadoc and Cheriton Open Gardens has raised significant funds for local charities and good causes over many years. Gardeners nominate charities at the start of each year before voting to select three organisations to support. The event has also been generously supported by local businesses, particularly Llanmadoc Community Shop.
