Cantorion Llanmadog is one of the village’s great success stories, bringing together people from across the Gower community through a shared love of music and friendship.

The choir’s story began in September 2008 when local resident Susan Henderson, inspired by the popular BBC television programme Last Choir Standing, placed a notice in Siop y Bobl inviting villagers to explore the idea of forming a community choir. The response was enthusiastic, and 15 residents attended the first rehearsal.

Meeting in the historic Trinity Chapel, the newly formed choir adopted the name Trinity Singers. Under the musical direction of Lynda Jenkins, the choir quickly established itself as a vibrant and welcoming group, attracting singers of all ages and musical backgrounds. What began as a small gathering soon developed into a thriving community organisation, united by a passion for singing and a commitment to village life.

In 2013, the choir adopted the name Cantorion Llanmadog, reflecting its strong roots in the village and its growing reputation throughout Gower and beyond. The new name acknowledged the choir’s role as an ambassador for Llanmadoc whenever it performed at concerts, festivals and community events.

Over the years, Cantorion Llanmadog has grown steadily from its original 15 members to around 40 singers. The choir performs a varied repertoire ranging from traditional Welsh favourites and folk songs to popular classics, contemporary arrangements and seasonal music. Their performances have become popular events in the local calendar, bringing together residents and visitors alike.

One of the choir’s proudest achievements has been its commitment to charitable fundraising. Through concerts and special events, Cantorion Llanmadog has raised an impressive £47,000 for local charities and community causes, supporting organisations that make a real difference across Gower and South Wales. This remarkable total reflects not only the choir’s musical talents but also its dedication to serving the wider community.

The choir was also honoured to have as its President the late David Soul, the American actor and singer best known for his role in Starsky & Hutch. His association with the choir brought both encouragement and recognition, and he remained a valued supporter of the group’s activities.

A spirit of adventure has always been part of Cantorion Llanmadog’s story. In 2010, while still performing as Trinity Singers, the choir embarked on its first overseas tour, joining forces with Gowerton ladies’ choir Voices in Harmony for a musical visit to Torrevieja, Spain.

The success of this memorable trip sparked a tradition that continues today. Since then, choir members have enjoyed touring and performing in a number of beautiful European destinations, including:

  • Kraków, Poland
  • Riga, Latvia
  • Tallinn, Estonia
  • Salzburg, Austria
  • Venice, Italy
  • Lake Bled, Slovenia
  • Ljubljana, Slovenia

These tours have provided opportunities to perform in stunning churches, concert venues and public spaces, while also experiencing different cultures, histories and musical traditions. Beyond the performances themselves, the tours have strengthened friendships within the choir and created countless treasured memories.

Today, Cantorion Llanmadog remains at the heart of village life. New members are always welcomed, and the choir continues to uphold the values on which it was founded: community, friendship, enjoyment and a love of singing. Whether performing locally, raising money for good causes or representing Llanmadog abroad, the choir continues to demonstrate how music can bring people together and enrich community life.

More than fifteen years after that first notice appeared in Siop y Bobl, Cantorion Llanmadog continues to thrive, providing harmony in every sense of the word.

Cantorion Llanmadog welcomes new members who enjoy singing and being part of a friendly, sociable community.
