Just a short distance east of Llanmadoc, Cheriton is a small, peaceful village on the northern side of Gower in the tranquil Cheriton Valley. It makes a lovely stop for anyone exploring the area on foot or by car, with historic buildings, country lanes and easy access to the surrounding countryside.

The village is best known for St Cadoc’s Church, a rare largely unrestored medieval country church dating largely from the late13th and early 14th centuries. The only Grade 1 listed parish church in the City and County of Swansea. Sometimes described as the “Cathedral of Gower”, it is the only church in Gower which has a central tower and contains a number of interesting medieval features. The churchyard is also the final resting place of Ernest Jones, the Welsh-born psychoanalyst and biographer of Sigmund Freud. (Edged in red granite on the left below the churchyard steps.)

Cheriton is also a good starting point for walks through the surrounding countryside, with footpaths leading towards Landimore, Stembridge and the marshes and coast around the Burry Inlet. For visitors staying in Llanmadoc, it is an easy nearby destination to combine with a countryside walk or a wider exploration of north-west Gower.
